Evolution of the shale

Instead of geology, here is art evolution. A simple photo blog of the stages from first layers of colour through to the finished painting. Intertidal is a 130cm x 150cm painting on canvas of the shale "scar" between Whitby and Saltwick Bay.

First layers of reds and green to build structure.
Scumbles of dark purple - this creates a deep violet over the reds and a brown/black over the green.
Adding several glazes of light blue over all areas.
Grey, blue and purple glazes to build depth.
After many blue, purple and lavender glazes - strengthening lines within the landscape.
The tape protected a light blue/grey area to retain a light form on the horizon.
Finally, a lot of layers of blue grey and dark glazes to slowly hide the underlying structures
- creating a soft atmospheric landscape.
