Good artists steal

Posted by on Monday, March 05, 2012

It's a well known fact that good artists steal ideas! This week I stole a few... though not to do with art, fortunately.
On Alyson Stanfield's Artist Conspiracy group we got a great podcast discussion between her and Charlie Gilkey of Productive Flourishing about productivity. Charlie spend the duration of the call sitting (and bouncing a bit!) on his yoga ball. A couple years ago I housesat a friend's flat in central London and used her yoga ball as a desk seat and loved it - how I didn't get around to buying my own I don't know! Charlie reminded me.

Plus he was wearing a hoodie that caught my eye. With a simple @CharlieGilkey on it. How cool is that? So I took advantage and ordered a free t-shirt with @tina-m on it! One reason I've always used this short name is that it's easy and memorable. (I've been Tina M since childhood... multiple Tina's in class, at work, and no one can spell my last name anyway so I make it easy for them!) Google tina-m and the top 3 results are my website, images and blog. All good!

And I stole another marketing idea this week from Linda Blondheim, she mentioned referral postcards on her blog and I loved the idea of giving people something they could send and share. So after telling her I was stealing the idea (she approved!) I ordered cards with a new painting on the front and my next 3 shows listed on the bottom at the back. I'm going to pre-stamp half of them and give them out at the Sublime exhibition and Open Studios! So that's a goal to give out 50 cards by the end of May for fans and collectors to help share my artwork.

So what great business ideas have you stolen lately???

I think great minds think alike sometimes. I've ordered postcards with a colourful ad for my next exhibition on the front. The plan is to give three cards to people; one to keep and two to pass on in any way they see fit. People seem very enthusiastic and are planning to pin them at work or in their shops etc. Fingers crossed.

Giving 2 or 3 is a good idea too!

I was given a t-shirt with "mrseb@mrseb.com" written across the chest many years ago -- but other than that, I've mostly avoided such things :P (But I do like to slip into the shadows, rather than promote... which is probably a bad thing...)
