Start of the first New Jersey coast paintings... these are mainly influenced by the splashes and waves. The canvases are starting on the smaller side, with one slightly larger at about 80x100cm (though it may not be that large when stretched).
First I draped large pieces of paper (I have a roll of printing paper for rough sketches) over the canvas and reworked drawings from the small journal to the larger size in charcoal.
When I was happy with the basic composition I lightly drew the main elements from the paper onto the canvas, again in charcoal because it will dissolve and disappear when I start to paint.
