The tiniest beauty

Posted by on Thursday, July 28, 2011

Yesterday was a laboratory day. No hill walking. (whew) Looking at thin slices of rock under the microscope. Which is not to say the view was any less spectacular...

A slice of rock under microscope with several mineral grains.

The exact same bit under cross-polars (turned about 180 degrees counter-clockwise, the dark black unit bottom of the first image is now at the top of the second image). Different minerals do different funny things in cross-polarized light.

Today is the last full day of geology out in the field. Tomorrow a short trip out to a mystery quarry and then our final test! Home in London by 11pm.

I'll miss the three cooked meals a day. But I have the tastiest treat known to man to get me through today at least...

YUM!
Need I say more?

Tina thank you for blogging this trip - your course looks fascinating and it's had me on the OU site thinking about what I might do.

Those rock slivers are fascinating and beautiful and I'm glad you are enjoying this course so much. I wonder what will come of it artistically? Anyway, good luck with the test!
