My first round a small studies for the Essex coast paintings are finished.
These are 5" canvas paintings of the 11 final sketches chosen. This essentially is the colour round of the studies (the sketches having been black and white - you can see them in last week's post). They're also another quick round of composition.
Some are inherently week - the colour either weakens the composition or they weren't strong enough to start with. A few are automatic contenders for larger paintings.
So out of curiousity, even this small and from this distance which ones catch your eye? Which makes you go "ooh, that would be a cool big painting"?
I'll share my choices and yours in another post!

My eye is drawn to the 2nd piece from the left and 4th piece from the right. I like the colors more in some of the other pieces, but these two stand out because of composition.
At any rate, this series is shaping up to be really cool!
Thanks Cindy (and the folks who commented on Facebook). Interesting to see a range of choices. :) So far you chose two that were definites for me too.
I'm drawn to the one exactly in the middle with the yellowish orange color field. BTW, I love all your work.
Numbers (from the left)3,11,8, and 1, in that order. Like Steven, I love all your work -- though apparently with quite different preferences.
I love the 5th one from the right and the 4th one from the left. It must be the green.
I like the 4th and 8th from the right... the two with white and black/brown... could be because I'm working on a series with these colors right now!
Also... you know as they say... they eye is drawn to the area with the most contrast...
I'm drawn to number 4 and 5...
5,6,7 and 8 (counting from the right) draw my eye either because of composition or color or both.
I'm really glad you've been so generous and shared your work process with us. I've been wanting to work in a series but did not know how or where to begin. Thank you for giving me some ideas.
I look forward to seeing which ones make the cut!
Hi My name is Charles Ivey. I'm an artist living in memphis, TN usa. To answer your question about the small paintings, I think that the one fourth from the left would make a good larger painting. The warm and cool tones are divided in a very appealing way.
